This concept of kinetic art comes from research on transparent surfaces. Imagining a minimal figure, the cube, I hypothesized to dissect it in a regular and geometric way by subdividing its interior into other, smaller cubes. This subdivision resulted from the interlocking of transparent Plexiglas slats: The vertical intersection of these slats draws lines and planes within the cube itself, creating in my mind a series of three-dimensional pixels. So I decided to use matter as a surface to create another shape: the sphere. The visual perception of the sphere is created by the interlocking of the red disks painted on the plexiglass, the eye sees a figure that does not actually exist, or appears to be three dimensional when in fact it is not. Looking at the work through the holes created by the interlocking of the disks, the visibility of the sphere is almost non-existent: It only comes alive through movement (of the artist or the viewer). The red disks intersect and are mirrored inside the cube, reflecting the geometry of the decomposition of this: thus we have the perception of a red sphere almost “muddy”, in constant movement and evolution. The figure is created and suspended inside the cube, deceiving the viewer and transporting him with the imagination inside the work itself. [S.L.]
