SHADOWS OF LIGHT at La Lanterna di Fuksas
ARCHITECTURE AND ART MEET INA CONTINUUM IN THE INSTALLATION THAT SIMONE LINGUA CONCEIVED AND INTEGRATED INTO THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE SPACE AT LA LANTERNA DI FUKSAS, ENHANCING ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH LIGHT.
Curated by Tiziana Tommei and promoted by Domus Art Gallery Athens, this site-specific installation features a metallic frame dotted with mirrored surfaces that occupies the space, creating a path amidst the artist’s kinetic works. Below the panoramic terrace’s roof structure, at the highest point where one finds La Lanterna – the scheme covering four floors of Rome’s former Military Union building, redeveloped on designs by Studio Fuksas – Simone Lingua has brought to life a project that recreates lines, lights and shadows, drawing inspiration from the observation of the developments and projections of the architectural context.
This project follows the course created by the artist over the years in regards to the relationship between art and context, both in terms of the urban environment and architecturally speaking, as a constant source of reflection, research and experimentation. “An installation that was born from a reflection on emptiness and variability […] An empty space inhabited on the surface by abstract, geometric and dynamic shapes – as curator Tiziana Tommei sees it – that reverberate, as in a mirror, by means of the artist’s intervention and become transformed into real elements, that is to say, metallic segments that are interconnected and concentrated in precise masses of a process that draws the boundaries of art’s confines within those of architecture. Masses comprising geometric figures, some empty, some mirrored, from which the supports for the artist’s exhibited works are created: cubes, spheres, cylinders and quadrangular panels, plexiglass and stainless steel volumes, all creations inspired by the artist’s vocabulary and pertinent to his kinetic works.”
The exhibit features works from 2015 to 2020, created using plexiglass and supermirror stainless steel, two materials that reinforce the dialogue with the elements of architecture, in a dynamic of references that underpins a clear concept of the creative expression. An incredible immersive experience in which the projection of lights and sounds animates the connection between installation, context and exhibited works. These become alive thanks to movement and to the spectator’s gaze, which takes on an active role, not only on a cognitive level but with a profound engagement in terms of perceptive experience. The project follows a course that originates in the heart of La Lanterna and then spreads throughout the space in the form of small islands: each of these hosts selected works, which appear to be constantly changing in shape and color, going as far as to suggest an illusory perception of real and continuous movement. Hence, the space of art permeates the space of architecture, bringing about a parallel dimension that draws origin, inspiration and features from the preexisting, pervading and yet never redefined structures.
The event is by invitation only.
