NINFEA
site specific installation
curated by Tiziana Tommei
Piazza delle Sorgenti, Bagno Vignoni
San Quirico d’Orcia (SI)
29 / 04 – 24 / 06 / 2018

From 29 April 2018, Bagno Vignoni, a historic spa town in Val d’Orcia, will host for two months a site-specific installation entitled Ninfea, created exclusively for the basin of Piazza delle Sources by the artist Simone Lingua, an emerging name in kinetic and optical art. The project, curated by Tiziana Tommei, will simultaneously present a wide-ranging exhibition that will extend to the area through a path that includes a triad of shelters. The event is part of the 2018 initiative Wellness Landscapes, promoted by the Municipality of San Quirico d’Orcia in collaboration with Bagno Vignoni Proloco. The Ninfea work was created thanks to the contribution of Bartoleschi Medical Center.

This is not the first time that the hamlet of Bagno Vignoni has opened its doors to contemporary art. For this occasion, Simone Lingua from Cuneo was called to compete with a historicizing context, strongly structured and focused on a reality full of memory and meaning: the famous “Vascone”, a thermal bath with a sacred aura, the heart of the city . With a length of 49 meters, a width of 24 meters and a depth of 95 cm, it dominates the square of the small town and collects within itself the waters of the thermal spring, whose exhalations create a floating and hallucinatory, almost metaphysical dimension. This natural environment inspired the artist, who imagined a parallel reality rising from the bottom of the basin and conceived a floe ideally held in suspension by the water. To give form to this kind of island, he took as his model a concept he had already used in his kinetic paintings: a theory of circular elements treated with paint on one side and mirrors on the other, then arranged within a defined perimeter. The installation thus conceived consists of 50 elements, each composed of a steel base and supports with chrome-plated and painted Plexiglas panes. Viewed as a whole, the work reveals a double soul: the one dominated by colour, which clothes the surface of the water with a red coat; the other mirrored, which penetrates and reflects the context and thus the viewer. The latter, moving and circling the basin, witnesses the gradual metamorphosis of the whole: he perceives its endogenous movement, the play of light produced by the water, the veiling of forms caused by the vapours on the mirrored surfaces, until the fusion of its two parts into one. A living organism, mutating through its kinetics, which, like a water flower, anchors itself to the bottom of the pool and displays blossoms and inflorescences above the water level. In addition, in correspondence with three selected poles, Adler Thermae, Albergo Le Terme, Albergo Posta Marcucci, works from the artist’s recent production will be exhibited: from the kinetic cylinder in Super Mirror steel, already exhibited at the Carrousel du Louvre (Paris, 2016), the Kinetic Cube, recently presented at Tag Gallery (Lugano, 2017), to the wall works, the Kinetic Paintings in Plexiglas and finally the Kinetic Domes, created at the end of 2017 and already exhibited in Bologna, Paris and Ferrara. In addition, an Infopoint will be set up in the Librorcia bookshop.
The Ninfea installation will be built and visible on site as early as April 20. The inauguration of the same, together with the widespread exhibition, will take place on Sunday 29 April at 5.00 pm. The works will remain available until 24 June 2018.
